Five Key Truths About Following Jesus

1. God created us in His image to have a relationship with Him.

So God created man in his own image in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them.
— Genesis 1:27
God decided in advance to adopt us into his own family by bringing us to himself through Jesus Christ. This is what he wanted to do, and it gave him great pleasure.
— Ephesians 1:5 (NLT)

2. Sin separates us from a perfect God and leaves a void within us.

For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.
— Romans 3:23

3. People try to fill the “God void” with all kinds of things in their lives.

All we like sheep have gone astray; we have turned – every one to his own way.
— Isaiah 53:6

4. Jesus paid the price for our sins by dying on the cross and resurrecting from the dead.

But God shows his love for us in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.
— Romans 5:8
For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
— Romans 6:23
Because if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.
— Romans 10:9

5. We are saved by grace through faith.

“Good works” are the fruit of our salvation, not the root of our salvation.

For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast. For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.
— Ephesians 2:8–10

HOW TO BECOME A FOLLOWER OF JESUS

The saying is trustworthy and deserving of full acceptance, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners.
— 1 Timothy 1:15

Admit that God has not been first in your life and ask Him to forgive your sins.

And Peter said to them, ‘Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins.
— Acts 2:38

Believe that Jesus is God’s Son, and trust that He died to pay for your sins, that He rose again,
and that He is alive today.

Because if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.
— Romans 10:9

Commit: Following Jesus is more than just an intellectual understanding of who Jesus is.
It’s also more than just a good feeling about Jesus. Deciding to follow Jesus means you
are committed to living your life for Him. The Bible tells us in Jesus we are made new!

This means that anyone who belongs to Christ has become a new person. The old life is gone; a new life has begun!
— 2 Corinthians 5:17 (NLT)
My old self has been crucified with Christ. It is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me. So I live in this earthly body by trusting in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.
— Galatians 2:20 (NLT)

Ready to trust Jesus as your Savior?

Let God know by saying a simple prayer something like this:

Dear God, I admit that I am a sinner and have done things my own way without You. I need forgiveness for my sins. I confess them to you now. I believe that your Son Jesus died on the cross for the forgiveness of my sins and that He rose from the dead. Thank you for forgiving me, saving me and for the presence of Your Holy Spirit to help me live my life for you! Amen.

For God so loved the world, that He gave His only Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life.
— John 3:16
